A display fridge that drifts above 5°C is more than an annoyance. It puts stock at risk, can fail an Environmental Health inspection, and often costs more in wasted electricity than the repair would. Most causes fall into a short list, and several of them you can check yourself in ten minutes before calling anyone out.
Do not trust the digital readout alone. Put a probe thermometer in a glass of water on the middle shelf, close the door or blind, and check it after an hour. Chilled display cabinets should hold food between 1°C and 5°C, and the legal limit in the UK is 8°C. If your probe reads 6°C to 10°C but the controller says 3°C, the sensor or controller is at fault rather than the cooling system.
Also note when the fridge struggles. If it is fine overnight but creeps up through the afternoon, the cause is usually ambient heat, door use or an overloaded cabinet. If it never gets down to temperature even when empty and shut, you are more likely looking at a refrigerant or compressor problem.
After years of call-outs across Rotherham, Sheffield and Doncaster, the same handful of problems account for the large majority of warm display fridges. Work through them in this order.
Where the fridge stands matters. A cabinet pushed hard against a wall with less than 100mm of clearance, or sat beside an oven, pie warmer or a south facing window, will fight a losing battle. Multideck open fronted units are rated for a maximum ambient temperature, often 25°C for cheaper models, and during a warm spell a shop can easily exceed that.
Overloading is the other common one. Stock stacked above the load line or blocking the air return grille at the front stops cold air circulating. Warm deliveries loaded straight in can push a cabinet up by several degrees for hours. Night blinds on open fronted units cut overnight running by roughly a quarter to a third and help the fridge recover for the next day.
A condenser clean, fan motor, door gasket or thermostat is usually a straightforward repair, and on most cabinets it is worth doing. Gaskets in particular are often overlooked: hold a sheet of paper in the door and if it slides out easily, the seal has gone and warm air is leaking in around the clock.
A compressor failure or a large refrigerant leak on a cabinet more than eight to ten years old is a harder call. Older units may use R404A, which is being phased down and is now expensive to source. In those cases the repair cost can come close to a good reconditioned or new cabinet, which will also use markedly less electricity. An honest engineer will give you both figures and let you decide.
Chilled food should be kept between 1°C and 5°C, with 8°C being the legal maximum in the UK. Check with a probe thermometer rather than relying on the cabinet's display.
You can safely clean the condenser, defrost the cabinet, check the door seal and make sure vents are not blocked. Anything involving refrigerant, the compressor or electrical components should be left to an F-Gas certified engineer.
It depends on the fault. A call-out with a condenser clean or minor part is typically far cheaper than a compressor or refrigerant repair, which on older cabinets can approach the cost of a replacement. Ask for a diagnosis and quote before committing.
